Hippotherapy/Equine-assisted Physical Therapy
The term hippotherapy refers to how occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology professionals use evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement as a therapy tool to engage sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes. (AHA website, 2025)
Unlike therapeutic horseback riding (where specific riding skills are taught), the movement of the horse is
a means to a functional improvement when utilizing hippotherapy as a treatment strategy. Hippotherapy
has been used to treat patients with neurological or other disabilities- such as autism, cerebral palsy,
multiple sclerosis, etc. (NIH.gov, 2016)
Sessions are offered at a small, private farm. A large indoor provides for year-round sessions. Mounted work occurs both in the indoor and on the beautiful property, including opportunities to explore a wide variety of settings. Non-mounted work can take place anywhere around the property
